Sustainability is critical for the long-term viability of biofuels and the emerging market countries where they are profitably grown. Biofuels have received increasing global attention due to fluctuating oil prices, awareness of global warming and the need for energy security. Worldwide investment in biofuels has soared, but recent studies indicate that some biofuels can compete with food production, harm the environment, exacerbate climate change and consume more energy than they produce. It is part of the SG Biofuels mission to be a sustainable supplier of crude plant oil for the global energy market.

SG Biofuels’ is planting Jatropha curcas because it does not compete with food production, lends itself to sustainable and environmentally positive development and enables carbon neutral energy production. Our Jatropha is grown on marginal land that has been abandoned or over-grazed and is no longer productive. This type of land is often referred to as “wasteland”. In other words, we plant Jatropha where food crops don’t grow, so as not to compete with food production.

Sustainable biofuel supply is more than just selecting the right crop to plant. It must also incorporate community development and sustainable agricultural practices. The SG Biofuels team has a long track record of building sustainable for profit projects and, as a result, has learned that the following guiding principles help us to be successful:

  • Social and Community Awareness
  • Environmental Awareness
  • Conservation
  • Strong support network with workers and local governments
  • Sustainable agriculture development

SG Biofuels is committed to sustainable practices for our business, the environment and the community.
Our model will bring opportunities to communities where we create thousands of jobs for local workers and, more importantly, we create thousands of local “owners”. SG Biofuels helps reduce poverty, invest in human capital and ensure environmental sustainability. With long-term owner and job creation, improved health care and education, as well as profit sharing opportunities, SG Biofuels’ sustainable development model is good for communities and all stakeholders.
