Mr. Alvarado has served for 13 years as Director of Centracom, Cadstudio and Vypsa, the Director of Emergency Aid for the Kan Naoh Foundation. In addition, he was the Director of the Chamber of Industry in Guatemala, The Treasurer and Vice President of the Guatemalan Management Association and a member of The American Chamber of Commerce (AMCHAM) and the (Guatemalan) Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Alvarado was the Executive Director of Western Union for Central America from 1993 to 2008 and a cabinet member of the Guatemalan Government in 1993. He has held numerous management positions, including General Manager of Revlon and Max Factor of Central America, Manager of the Industrial Bank of Guatemala, and General Manager and Controller of Boise Cascade in the Bahamas. He is a citizen of Guatemala with a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of San Carlos in Guatemala as well as a Bachelor of Arts degree from the International Marketing Institute in the United States.
Paul Dickerson has over 16 years working with accounting, law and public policy. Most recently, he served as Chief Operating Officer, Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) in the US Department of Energy where he was responsible for a $1.74 billion budget and over 1,000 employees and contractors. The EERE funds research and deployment of new energy technology, including biofuel. Prior to that position, he was Chief of Staff, Trade Promotion and U.S. and Foreign Commercial Service for the Department of Commerce, protecting US commercial interests abroad. He is a CPA and holds a BA in Business Administration from the University of Texas at Austin and a JD from South Texas College of Law.
Mr. Heins has more than 35 years of management experience in agribusiness, most recently serving as General Manager of the Andean Region for DuPont. While with DuPont, he designed and implemented the company's Strategic Plan for the Andean Region, doubling sales to reach US$300MM in 2007. He also led the restructuring and consolidation of DuPont's Agribusiness Unit for the Andean Region with sales of US$180MM. Since his retirement from DuPont in 2007, he has served as an active director and strategic counsel to numerous private companies and organizations, providing leadership in change-management and transformation process. His roles have included leading the creation of ProBarranquilla, the investment promotion agency for the city of Barranquilla, serving on the board of directors at InverArgos and participating actively in the internationalization of Cementos Argos. He is a member of the board of directors for Agencia Nacional de Hidrocarburos (ANH), and an active participant in the creation of the National Strategic Plan for the Exploration of Hidrocarbons in Colombia.
As Managing Director, Kukutai is responsible for Finistere Venture's agricultural technology and green energy portfolio investments and is a member of the firm's Investment Committee. Prior to joining Finistere, Kukutai served as Regional Director - North America for the New Zealand government's trade development agency in North America, establishing multiple pathways for New Zealand businesses to access this key market. Kukutai has had an active career in investment, both in commercial banking at Westpac Banking Corporation, and as a Director of PKW Incorporation, a successful $300 million agribusiness and diversified investment entity involved in agriculture, aquaculture and property development with activities in New Zealand, Asia and Australia. He has served as Chairman of PKW Farms, a large pastoral dairy agribusiness in New Zealand. He currently serves on the boards of Hawaii BioEnergy, LLC, Somark Innovations, Inc. and Tiller Cohen Farms, LP. He is also Chairman of the Larta Institute's advisory board for the USDA Commercialization program for SBIR grantee companies and has been closely involved in the development of the Ag Innovation Showcase, the leading event for innovation in the Agriculture sector, where he is Chairman of the Industry Advisory Board.
Edgar Masri is executive chairman of Qualtre, Inc., an Atlanta, GA startup, funded by Matrix Partners and Pilot House and focused on commercializing the next generation of motion sensors. From 2006 until April 2008, Mr. Masri was President and Chief Executive Officer of 3Com Corporation, a leading global data networking company. During his tenure, he negotiated, led the acquisition of, and chaired the board of H3C, the joint venture between 3Com and Huawei. He recommended and managed the go-private transaction with Bain Capital. Mr. Masri joined Matrix Partners, a leading venture capital firm in 2000. He led the investment in and served on the board of a number of semiconductor and telecommunication equipment startups. Prior to Matrix, Masri was president of 3Com Ventures and senior vice president of 3Com's corporate business development.
With more than 25 years of business and technical experience, Oliveira leads Bunge's global innovation team, focused on sourcing next generation technologies in food, feed, fuel and fertilizer. Oliveira's business and technical experience provides important insight into implementing new technology in both the agriculture and bioenergy markets. Oliveira originally joined Bunge in 1985 as production and quality control manager in its isolated soy protein plant in Southern Brazil. After earning his Ph.D., he became product manager for isolates and concentrates for Bunge in Brazil, ultimately becoming the chief operating officer of the ingredients division for Bunge's operations in Brazil in 2000. Oliveira also helped create the Solae soy ingredients joint venture between Bunge and DuPont.
Until recently, Dr. Fernando Reinach was a general partner of Votorantim Ventures, a venture capital fund of the Votorantim Group, one of Brazil’s largest private conglomerates with revenues of US$8 billion. He also serves as a board member of Amyris. He is one of the founders of CanaVialis, the world’s largest breeder of sugarcane (acquired by Monsanto in 2008), as well as Alellyx (also acquired by Monsanto in 2008), now the world’s largest sugarcane biotechnology company. In 1990, he co-founded Genomic Engenharia Molecular, one of the first Brazilian companies to perform DNA and paternity tests and one of the country’s largest DNA testing companies. Reinach organized and was a coordinator of the Brazilian Genome project, an initiative by a number of institutions aimed at sequencing the genomes of Xylella fastidiosa and Xanthomonas citri bacteria. He graduated with a degree in biology from the University of São Paulo (USP) and has a Ph.D. in cellular and molecular biology from Cornell University.
Dr. Short is the founder of BioAtla, LLC, a pioneering biological services company, and currently serves as its Chairman and CEO. He is also a founder of Diversa Corporation (now Verenium) where he served in multiple roles over his 11 year tenure, including CEO, President and Chief Technology Officer. Dr. Short led the company in raising a combined $500 million by leading the largest biotechnology IPO in history at the time and establishing partnerships and joint ventures with best-in-class companies including Novartis, Syngenta, Dow Chemical, Dupont, Bunge, Danisco, GSK, Merck and Aventis. Dr. Short received San Diego's 2001 Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award in Health Sciences and has authored more than 100 publications. He is named inventor of over 100 issued patents and several hundred pending patents. He has served on the U.S. National Research Council panel for Chemical Science and Technology at the National Institute of Standards and Technology and numerous other governmental, grant and journal review committees and boards.
Former Congressman Jerry Weller is the Chairman and Founder of New World Group, LLC, an international consulting and strategic advisory firm specializing in public affairs and business development in the Caribbean and Latin America. During his 14 years in the United States Congress, Weller served as Deputy Majority Whip, Vice-Chair of the Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere, and Chair of the House Republican Working Group on Latin America & the Caribbean. He also Co-Chaired the Bi-Partisan US-Panama Caucus as well as the Caribbean Caucus, and regularly participated in the US-Mexico Inter-Parliamentary Exchange.
